Red Sox Projected To Retain $182 Million Superstar After Winter Meetings

The Boston Red Sox need to re-sign or replace Alex Bregman at third base this offseason. Bregman sits in free agency and is projected to sign a $182 million deal this offseason, per Jim Bowden of The Athletic.

But there are other options the Red Sox could pursue. They could target somebody like Ketel Marte in a blockbuster trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks. They could also go after somebody like Eugenio Suárez.

Bleacher Report’s Erik Beaston predicted the Red Sox would opt to re-sign Bregman to a huge deal this winter.

“Bregman is an exceptional defender, so it makes sense that the incumbent Red Sox, Cubs, and Tigers would be looking to sign him to improve key areas of their team,” Beaston wrote. “Boston also needs a quality and dependable bat in their lineup and Bichette could be that, just as he could be for the Braves and his Blue Jays.

“Despite the interest in both, with the exception of Bregman possibly signing with the same Detroit team that expressed interest in him last year at this time, it seems rather unlikely that either switches caps.”

The Red Sox will need to beat out teams like the Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs to retain Bregman, but they have the upper hand after signing him last winter.

The Red Sox might need to give Bregman a longer-term deal than they’re comfortable with right now. Bregman is likely looking for a five or six-year deal, and the Red Sox seem hesitant to give it up. But Bregman is the best option for Boston, so it’s going to need to make a tough decision in the coming weeks.
