The New York Mets are going to look very different in 2026.
Over the course of the offseason so far, the Mets already have lost Pete Alonso and Edwin Díaz in free agency and traded away Brandon Nimmo. On Monday, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported the club was trading two-time All-Star Jeff McNeil to the Athletics after eight seasons with the organization.
“Trade news: The A’s are acquiring second baseman Jeff McNeil from the New York Mets, sources tell ESPN,” Passan wrote on X on Monday.
Passan followed up and reported that the Mets included cash in the deal in exchange for a 17-year-old pitching prospect Yordan Rodriguez.
“Full trade, per ESPN sources: A’s receive: Jeff McNeil and $5.75 million (to help cover his $15.75 million salary; the Mets also would pay his $2 million buyout if his option isn’t exercised),” Passan wrote on X. “Mets receive: RHP Yordan Rodriguez.”
McNeil made his big league debut with the Mets back in 2018 and developed into an All-Star while playing all over the diamond for New York over the last eight seasons. Overall, McNeil played in 923 games as a member of the organization and slashed .284/.351/.428 with 80 homers, 367 RBIs, 37 stolen bases, and 193 doubles.
