Two teams that stumbled down the stretch face off in the New Orleans Bowl on Tuesday night as the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (8-4) take on the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (7-5) at the Caesars Superdome.

Western Kentucky faltered late, losing out on a spot in the Conference USA championship game with a loss at Jacksonville State on Nov. 29, and comes into the New Orleans Bowl off back-to-back defeats. Cornerback Dylan Flowers entered the transfer portal. Rodney Tisdale Jr. started the final five games at quarterback and has 1,367 yards and nine touchdowns with six interceptions, while Marvis Parrish leads the ground attack with 511 yards. La’Vell Wright ran for 460 yards and 10 scores as well. Matthew Henry caught 48 passes for 762 yards and six TDs, with K.D. Hutchinson is hauling in 61 catches for 619 yards and three touchdowns. Jaylen Wester leads the defense with 94 tackles, 45 of them solos.
Southern Miss lost its last three regular-season games, with its loss to visiting Troy on Nov. 29 knocking the Golden Eagles out of the Sun Belt Conference championship game. Head coach Charles Huff left for Memphis, with offensive coordinator Blake Anderson elevated to the position. Braylon Braxton threw for 2,795 yards and 23 touchdowns with seven picks, with Jeffery Pittman leading the running game with 640 yards and eight scores. Elijah Metcalf leads the team with 52 receptions and 677 yards, while Carl Chester caught 30 balls for 532 yards and six TDs. J’Mond Tapp racked up 7.5 sacks, and Josh Moten has five interceptions.
Western Kentucky is 4-0 all-time against Southern Miss, with their most recent meeting a 10-7 homefield win for the Hilltoppers on Nov. 14, 2020.
